The United Nations estimates that 25 percent of migrants in Europe came from African countries in 2018.

Canada and Australia trade statistics and statistics. Who wins this battle of statistics, in regards to migration, would be a great boon to Canadians and Australians, since this knowledge and analytical methods would further their immigration policy goals. Let’s explore the statistics, which are useful because of who benefits from them.

See the following two charts. Look at Canada and Australia, and compare the grey slivers with their own data. In Canada, the grey slivers represent “less-than-minor irregular migration” or the “graying” of the largest potential immigrant groups in the country, and this greyish border is the United States of America. Of the 4,235,331 migrants who left Canada between 2011 and 2018, most went to the United States. In Australia, the grey slivers represent “more significant irregular migration” or “under-reporting of irregular migration”. In Australia, the grey slivers represent “roughly 6 million irregular migrants and no significant reporting of irregular migration”. Canada and Australia are great trading partners, both countries depend heavily on trade with the United States, with Canada falling to being America’s main trading partner. Figure 2, Chart 3. The same chart, presents more information about Canada. The grey slivers for each year is higher than the purple line, which represents less-than-minor irregular migration. Figure 2, Chart 3. The grey slivers represent big gains for Canada, about 170,000 migrants leaving between 2012 and 2017. This is the highest number in the grey sliver line. This data is used to create Ontario’s census-like population estimates. They do a great job of giving a better understanding of who the biggest populations are of people moving to Canada, and Canada’s potential and actual immigration flows. America is another country that values trade, and therefore it favors trade. Both countries look to America, and it also favors both countries, both benefit. Figure 2, Chart 3. In order to analyze the same data in Australia and in Canada, the two countries use two methods. In the United States, they use a “’recruiting model’ that links the migration data to immigration data”. This model “considers not only geographic location but also factors such as immigration/refugee flows, the state of economic prosperity, and immigration categories,” according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In Canada, the two countries use a “real” jobs count “…that incorporates foreign immigration and refugee migration”. Such a concept is quite different from the “recruiting model” in the United States.

In Australia, the Federal Government has been pushing its new centre to stop the flow of irregular migrants, and it has been successful, according to them. This makes it more likely that Australian citizens will benefit from migration. In the United States, this model is far more complicated and restrictive. The politicians will gladly politicize the data, because they are such a big beneficiary of the statistics that are utilized. For them, the statistics show their political wins on immigration. Figure 2, Chart 3. In Canada, the data is very important, and the countries might cooperate on shaping migration policy.

A successful immigration system does great things for both economies and the citizens of the countries. A study conducted by Canadian and Australian economists says that for many people in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, the pay on a per hour basis is much lower than the cost of housing and transit in Canada. If you live in Canada, you can afford housing, even if the rent prices are high.
